Adulting is hard, y'all! But lately, I feel like I've been doing a decent job of it. I'll be blogging about all sorts of adulting-related topics like budgeting, work-life balance, meal planning, etc. This blog is mostly a hobby for me, and I think it's going to help me stay focused on some of my goals too. Of course, since it's a public blog, I also hope it will help some of you with your adulting skills. (For those unfamiliar with the term, "adulting" is the trendy new word young adults use to describe all the "adult" responsibilities they have that they often feel unprepared for or incapable of.)
So who is MarissAdulting?
Surprise, my name is Marissa! I'm a new professional, fresh out of graduate school. I work in higher education, and recently moved to a new (small) city for my job. Life in grad school was chaotic; with working long hours, studying for exams, and trying to find time for sleep, it was really hard to stay on top of the basics (like a clean apartment, grocery shopping and cooking healthy meals, etc.) Now that I have a more normal schedule, I'm really focusing on establishing some of those good habits.
Clearly, I'm not an expert - but I feel like I'm doing okay so far... I've been in my new city and apartment for just over a month, and I've managed to pack my lunch every day for work, set up a budget, learn about retirement planning, and start getting back into a workout routine (that's the hardest thing so far.) I'm learning a lot by trial and error through all this, so I hope to share some of the strategies that are working for me!
I'm also single with no kids, so most of these adulting tips aren't going to be geared toward parents trying to figure out how to feed a family of 4 with two very picky eaters, or keeping a clean house while tripping over lego sculptures. A lot of the stuff here could still be helpful for parents, but that's just not the focus.
